Men's Health Q & A

What is low testosterone?

Testosterone is the hormone your testicles produce that triggers sexual development and supports traits such as muscle mass, sex drive, body and facial hair, and a deep voice. However, you may not have sufficient testosterone levels, which is clinically called low testosterone or low-T.

A variety of factors can contribute to low testosterone. For example, you may damage your testicles. Other causes of low testosterone include:

  • Congenital conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome or Noonan syndrome
  • Chemotherapy or radiation
  • Pituitary gland disease
  • Infections
  • Autoimmune diseases

Other factors that contribute to low testosterone include obesity, decreased physical activity, loss of muscle mass, poor nutritional status, stress, poor sleep quality, chronic diseases, environmental stresses, aging, and medications including antidepressants and narcotics.

How does low testosterone affect men’s health?

Decreased testosterone levels can impact your overall health and wellness in many ways. For example, some of the usual low testosterone symptoms include:

  • Reduced sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Weight gain
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Depression
  • Mental fog
  • Decreased strength
  • Aging skin

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with the team at Weight Loss and Vitality for expert assessment and low-T treatment.

How is low testosterone treated?

At Weight Loss and Vitality, your doctor begins with a thorough physical exam and blood tests to identify the condition causing your symptoms. If low testosterone is the root cause of your health issues, your doctor creates a customized testosterone treatment plan including testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).

TRT is a type of hormone replacement therapy. After your initial assessment, your doctor prescribes natural, bioidentical hormone therapy as either a testosterone injection, subdermal pellet, cream, or oral pill. As you progress through TRT, you have frequent appointments for your doctor to monitor your symptoms and hormone levels, adjusting your prescription as needed to optimize your health.

Also, your doctor may recommend some lifestyle adjustments such as changing your diet, adding more exercise to your daily routine, and quitting smoking to improve your health and reduce your symptoms.

Over time, you should find that your energy levels and sex drive increase, with ED symptoms subsiding. You’ll also lose weight more easily and rebuild your lean muscle mass.

If you’re concerned about low testosterone or other men’s health issues, call Weight Loss and Vitality or schedule a consultation online today.
